Although, it is not possible to predict the average time it takes for
a chip to crack, experiments and research has shown than thermal stresses
(extreme hot or cold temps) as well as road conditions (road bump, pot hole)
can cause immediate cracking out of a windshield rock chip.
Experiments also suggest that chipped windshields are prone to
fatigue failure over time. We also know that on average 50% of
chips crack within a year, (my expiereance in doing many crack repairs I
estamate 5 to 10% will happen within a week), 80% within 2 years and
90% within 3 years.
